Yesterday it was announced that Myrna Castrejón will lead the Great Public Schools Now initiative. The Broad Foundation unveiled the Great Public Schools Now initiative last year calling on Los Angeles to push for urgent changes to best serve students in Los Angeles Unified. Castrejón, a Mom, comes from the advocacy world where she most recently served as the Senior Vice President of the California Charter Schools Association. She has a long history of fighting for educational equity and reform including work in Texas and California.
The Great Public Schools Now initiative is starting to build an organization with the goal of increasing high quality educational options in Los Angeles. These options include charter schools, which are public schools managed independently and replicating or expanding other existing excellent school models such as LAUSD Magnets. The objective of Great Public Schools Now is to improve the academic performance of students across the Los Angeles Unified School District.
“There are children who have been trapped in pockets of underperformance throughout Los Angeles. This underperformance is stopping our community from achieving all that it can,” Castrejón said. “I want to look at areas in the city where the need is greatest to develop better options for them, whether it’s successful charter schools that will open in those areas or district initiatives that can serve the same purpose of improving educational outcomes.”
Castrejón stressed that the Great Public Schools Now is not a charter only initiative but is a “kids first” initiative. Her goal is to raise the funds and build the infrastructure to make sure that the organization is strategic in making investments throughout Los Angeles in the areas that need it most.
“There is no pre-cooked plan in what we are going to do with this initiative. But my job is to engage with communities and to make sure that whatever we roll out is going to meet the needs of students. Parents and children need schools that work, and I don’t think they are so concerned about the governance structure that the schools follow,” Castrejón explained.
The timing of Castrejón entering her new position with Great Public Schools Now comes after the Los Angeles Unified School District announced that Michelle King, the first African-American woman to serve as superintendent, was made earlier this week.
Castrejón is excited to work with Michelle King because she sees some similarities in their experiences as women of color working on behalf of children.
“She and I have close to the same level of experience, but she has an unparalleled level of knowledge in the classroom, whereas I come from the advocacy world. But you have two seasoned women of color who understand what education can unlock for our communities. I have no doubt that she and I will have a lot in common when it comes to deciding how to serve students in Los Angeles well,” Castrejón said.

Ayer se anunció que Myrna Castrejón llevará la iniciativa de Mejores Escuelas Públicas Ahora. La Fundación Broad dio a conocer la iniciativa Mejores Escuelas Públicas Ahora, el año pasado se le pidieron a Los Ángeles para impulsar cambios urgentes para servir mejor a los estudiantes en Los Angeles Unificado. Castrejón, una mamá, que viene del mundo de defensa donde más recientemente se desempeñó como Vicepresidente de la Asociación de Escuelas Chárter de California. Ella tiene una larga historia de lucha por la equidad educativa y la reforma que incluye el trabajo en Texas y California.
La iniciativa Escuelas Mejores Públicas Ahora está empezando a construir una organización con el objetivo de aumentar las opciones educativas de alta calidad en Los Ángeles. Estas opciones incluyen las escuelas autónomas, que son las escuelas públicas gestionadas de forma independiente y replicar o ampliar otras excelentes modelos escolares existentes, como LAUSD Imanes. “Hay niños que se han visto atrapadas en el hueco de bajo rendimiento en todo los Ángeles. Este bajo rendimiento está deteniendo a nuestra comunidad de alcanzar todo lo que puede “, dijo Castrejón. “Quiero mirar a zonas de la ciudad donde la necesidad es mayor para desarrollar mejores opciones para ellos, ya sea en las escuelas charter exitosas que se abrirán y en aquellas áreas o iniciativas del distrito que pueden servir al mismo propósito de mejorar los resultados educativos.”
Castrejón subrayó que Mejores Escuelas Públicas Ahora no es una carta única de iniciativa, pero es una iniciativa de “los niños primero”. Su objetivo es recaudar fondos y construir una infraestructura para asegurarse de que la organización sea estratégica en la realización de inversiones a través de Los Ángeles en las áreas que más lo necesitan.
“No hay un plan pre-cocinado en lo que vamos a hacer con esta iniciativa. Pero mi trabajo es colaborar con las comunidades para asegurarse de que todo se lleve a cabo y satisfacer las necesidades de los estudiantes. Los padres y los niños necesitan escuelas que trabajen, y yo no creo que están tan preocupados por la estructura de gobierno de las escuelas explicó Castrejón.
El momento que Castrejon entra en su nueva posición con Mejores Escuelas Públicas Ahora viene después qué el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Los Ángeles anunció que Michelle King, la primera mujer afroamericana va a servir como superintendente, se hizo a principios de esta semana.
Castrejón está emocionada de trabajar con Michelle Rey porque ve algunas similitudes en sus experiencias como mujeres de color que trabajan en favor de los niños.
“Ella y yo tenemos casi el mismo nivel de experiencia, pero ella tiene un incomparable nivel de conocimiento en el aula, mientras que yo vengo del mundo de defensa. Pero hay dos mujeres con experiencia de color que entiende lo que la educación puede desbloquear a nuestras comunidades. No tengo ninguna duda de que ella y yo tenemos mucho en común cuando se trata de decidir cómo servir a los estudiantes en Los Ángeles así “, dijo Castrejón.
