Many parents might have heard the phrase “School of Choice” by now, but I don’t know how many parents understand the details behind the phrase. I know I didn’t know too much about it until recently. I learned a bit more about my options and I want to share this information with you and hope you share it with everyone you know. BY LAW, you have choices but this information is not shared with parents at schools so, as Comadres, we’re sharing it with you. Your children are depending on you to make the right choice.
If you have not heard the phrase, I urge you read this short information blog as this is an important time for all parents who are unhappy with current school or simply considering to find their children a better school.
What is The Open Enrollment Act?
The Act, which became law in 2010, requires the Department of Education to compile a list of 1,000 low performing schools and make it available to the public.
You can find the latest list of schools and their Academic Performance Index (API) scores by clicking here.
Any student who is enrolled in one of these failing schools has the option to transfer to any higher performing school even if that school is in another district, as long as there is space.
When looking for a new school you want to make sure and check out the API scores for all schools you are considering.
What to do if the school your child is attending is on the list:
If the school your child is attending to is on the list, explore other options now. Your child deserves to have high quality education. You want your child to be prepared for college and life. When your child begins the college application process you want to make sure he/she is prepared to do well on SAT and ACT and one way you can help them now is by having them in a school that is thriving not one that is failing.
The 2016-2017 school year starts in September, yet now is the time to start this process. The first deadline has already passed (January 1st) but you can you can still enroll. Consider searching for schools near a babysitter, trusted family members and or near your job if it is convenient.
Once you find a school of your choice, you need to contact the district where you want to enroll your child for further information and tell them you are interested in transferring using the Open Enrollment Act.
Four years ago when I had to make a decision on my daughter’s education, there were many things that scared me from making a move. I knew she would be upset. I knew she would miss her friends. And I feared that she might do worse at a new school to rebel against my decision. I weighed my options and I knew that I was losing her at her large public school. It was a hard choice but I knew that I wanted her desperately to be prepared for college and her school was NOT preparing her. In the end, I knew my decision made sense and was the best thing I could do for her. Now, she’s receiving college acceptance letters and with each college acceptance letter, I know that making the right school choice was the right thing for my daughter. Make the right school choice for your children.

Muchos padres podrían haber escuchado la frase “Escuela de su elección” por ahora, pero no sé cuántos padres van a entender los detalles detrás de la frase. Yo sé que no sé mucho al respecto hasta hace poco. He aprendido un poco más acerca de mis opciones y quiero compartir esta información con ustedes y espero que lo compartas con todos tus conocidos. Por ley, usted tiene opciones pero esta información no se comparte con los padres en las escuelas, así como la Comadres lo comparte con ustedes. Sus hijos dependen de usted para tomar la decisión correcta.

Hace cuatro años, cuando tuve que tomar una decisión sobre la educación de mi hija, había muchas cosas que me asustaban de hacer un movimiento. Yo sabía que ella iba a estar molesta. Sabía que echaría de menos a sus amigos. Y yo temía que ella estuviera peor en una escuela nueva y rebelarse en contra de mi decisión. A pesar de mis opciones yo sabía que la estaba perdiendo en su gran escuela pública. Fue una decisión difícil, pero yo sabía que quería desesperadamente que estuviera preparada para la universidad y en esa escuela no estaba preparándose. Al final, yo sabía que mi decisión tenía sentido y era lo mejor que podía hacer por ella. Ahora, ella está recibiendo cartas de aceptación de la universidad y con cada carta de aceptación de la universidad, sé que tomé la decisión correcta esa escuela fue lo correcto para mi hija. Tome la decisión adecuada de la escuela para sus hijos.
