Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory announces two exciting film and media programs for young people in the Los Angeles area.
Aligned with its goal of creating pathways to careers in the music, arts, and entertainment industries, these programs specifically offer opportunities to young students in the most under-served areas of Los Angeles, especially those residing within Boyle Heights and surrounding areas of El Sereno, East Los Angeles, South Los Angeles and Lincoln Heights.
“We are dedicated to helping young people explore careers in the Entertainment Capital of the World – even when that industry has created barriers to those paths. We feel it is the responsibility of the film, television, broadcasting, and other creative arts industry to stretch beyond their traditional hiring outlets and look in their own backyard.” Explains Carmelita Ramirez-Sanchez, Executive Director for Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory. “With this in mind we will provide professional training and workshops that will prepare our students in becoming solid candidates for these industries.”
Nueva Novelas Film and Media program – Programming Partner Justice for My Sister
Nuevas Novelas is a cultural exchange, storytelling, and gender equity program presented by Justice for My Sister Collective. This 8-week program allows participants to not only engage in a conversation on media, but to also change the narrative through the filming of impactful videos.
Have you noticed that mainstream media often promotes and saturates our senses with images of gender-based violence and women as victim narratives? Would you like to change that Narrative? We help our young women identify this negative association so they can develop the skill set necessary to become independent thinkers and leaders.
Learn to Write, Film, Produce, Edit videos with a team of like-minded individuals, working to shift the lens of how women are portrayed in film, television, and media.
The program will begin June 14, 2016 and take place
Tuesday 1:20pm – 6pm
Thursday 1:30p, – 6pm followed by a yoga and meditation workshop 6pm – 7pm.
Dinner, fruit, snack, and beverage provided free of cost to all participants.

CAPSA –Summer Arts Program – Presented by CalArts Community Arts Partnership
Designed for teens ages 15-18 in grades 10, 11, 12 or graduating high school in June 2016, the CAPSA Program is a tuition-free three week intensive arts program.
Classes are offered in Acting, Animation, Creative Writing, Dance, Film Music, and Visual Arts. Each workshop is led by the world-renowned faculty of CalArts and CalArts student instructors who introduce CAPSA participants to the studio environment and provide guidance in creating original works of art.
You will visit Los Angeles’ most prominent arts institutions, attend talks with accomplished visiting artists, learn about college applications and financial aid programs, and exhibit or perform your work in an arts festival for family and friends!

Carmelita Ramirez-Sanchez
She has developed youth programming for a number of Brands and Government organizations including, Los Angeles County, Nike, Interscope Records, Adidas, City of Los Angeles, and Gay and Lesbian Center of Los Angeles.
Carmelita currently serves as Executive Director of Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory, which trains students through specialized curricula, emphasizing economic and cultural equity, toward careers in the arts and entertainment industries.
