Dear L.A. Unified Families,
This letter is to reaffirm the District’s commitment to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment for every student, in light of the federal government’s announcement on September 5, 2017, to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA has temporarily permitted eligible immigrant youth to work, as well as shielded them from deportation. While this program primarily impacts young adults (ages 18- 25), we understand the uncertainty and anxiety that many families, students, and educators may feel.
It remains District policy not to inquire about a student’s or family member’s immigration status for enrollment or educational purposes, and we do not release student records without parental consent or a judicial warrant. We will continue to create safe spaces where students can flourish and engage in conversations about these critical issues.

Our message is clear: L.A. Unified stands shoulder-to-shoulder with immigrant families and employees, and provides supportive teaching and learning environments that encourage success for all.
As I have said, DACA recipients have made valuable contributions to the community and the nation they consider home, and they have earned the right to a permanent place in its history. Thank you for your ongoing efforts to ensure that your student attends school each day, as education remains the gateway for students to realize their dreams.
Your Superintendent,
Dr. Michelle King
