New Leaders Council Los Angeles Needs Your Help

My name is Miguel Angel Segura, born and raised in Westlake/Echo Park area of Los Angeles. I attended all LAUSD schools. I’m a passionate, focused, and disciplined man. I’m a political staffer, an educator, and always a community organizer.  This year I took part of a six month leadership development fellowship called New Leaders Council Los Angeles. I’m one of 20 fellows all currently living in Southern California.

Come meet us at our completion graduation, meet and greet, networking event on Saturday, June 15, 2019 from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM. I’ve learned better methods on how to fundraise, how to a campaign, how to communicate, how to use social media to benefit you or your cause. I’ve drawn and spoken about my perfect day 15 years from now. I’ve made a plan towards that perfect day. I’ve told my story and become vulnerable with my cohort. The Institute Curriculum trains Fellows in the skills needed to run for public office, start a non-profit, or launch a business. We are currently looking for next year’s cohort, the future movers and shakers of our city and country. I’ve made a family from this organization of individuals, who are very progressive in all different careers. I’ve met a national connection since NLC is national all across the US. I will be attending national conference in July 2019 in Iowa.

This year, I’ve had the pleasure of being a fellow in the Los Angeles chapter of New Leaders Council (NLC) fellowship. It’s a six month leadership development program that trains millennial progressives to make change in their communities, run for political office, and advocate for/create equitable systems.

The GOP establishment pours millions of dollars every year into recruiting and training young leaders, like Paul Ryan, and NLC is the progressive equivalent – except, you know, the opposite of Paul Ryan.

Our annual fundraiser will take place on June 15 at Self Help Graphics in East LA – tacos, music, and cool guest speakers will be in abundance!

If you’re not able to attend, your $20 donation will help train the next generation of progressive leaders across LA as well as other states. Let’s fight for each other and our shared future!

So where does the money go? NLC is a national non-profit; the LA chapter has been around for 10 years and is run entirely by volunteers like me. We need to fundraise at least $20,000 to keep our chapter self-sustaining. The additional funds that we raise go to starting and maintaining newer NLC chapters in places like Wisconsin, Montana, Iowa, and Nebraska.

Miguel, a product of LAUSD schools, was born and raised in Board District 5. At fourteen, Miguel volunteered for the Al Gore Presidential Campaign, igniting his passion and drive for public service. He attended California State University, Northridge, majoring in Political Science and Chicano/a Studies. As an undergraduate student, he took advantage of every opportunity to become more thoroughly involved in his collegiate experience. He became a New Student Orientation Leader and later became a Coordinator of the program. He joined his university’s Associated Students-Student Government, serving as a Student Senator for two years and Student Body President during his last year, representing 36,000 students. Upon completion of his degree in 2009, Miguel served as an intern on the Business Team for former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, with aims to continue developing his engagement in the field of public service. Thereafter, he was recruited by Teach for America and taught for four years in Pico Union and South LA. While teaching, Miguel continued to pursue higher education and graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Master’s in Education. In 2012, Miguel began volunteering for the Finance Team on Eric Garcetti’s campaign for Mayor of Los Angeles. As a native Angeleno, Miguel hoped to remain a relentless advocate for his community and in 2014, was elected to the Westlake North Neighborhood Council. Among his contributions to his own community, Miguel served as an Advance Staffer for Hillary for America, a Staffer to 49th District Assemblymember Ed Chau, a Consultant and Organizer for a New York City Field Program, and a Press Aide. A strong champion of advocacy, education and social justice, Miguel is thrilled and humbled to be part of the Board District 5 Team. As our Director of Community Engagement, Southeast, Miguel serves as a liaison between BD5 and the schools and communities in the Southeast Cities. He manages constituent casework; supports schools throughout the Southeast; and builds and maintains relationships with political, advocacy, and local community groups. Miguel mobilizes parents and community members to help them develop the organizing skills they need to be self-advocates to create real systems change. In his own words, “change comes when people stand up, speak up, and no longer want to stick to the status quo.”
