March 16, 2020 – Governor Newsom is encouraging local cities and counties to follow his lead after issuing an executive order to halt evictions, slow foreclosures, and prevent utility shut offs for all California residents affected by COVID-19. “People shouldn’t lose or be forced out of their home because of the spread of COVID-19. Over the next few weeks everyone will have to make sacrifices – but a place to live shouldn’t be one of them.”
Looking to Italy as a case study of using mortgage and rent cancellation to prevent panic and unnecessary hardship – the United States currently has no federal plan in place to alleviate the burden placed on residents, who in many cases, are unable to work while under preventative social isolation measures. While Governor Newsom’s order is a solid first step, La Comadre looks forward to seeing elected officials put further measures in place to keep people in their homes, and off the streets.
