Reducing Contact with Others for 10-14 Days will Help Everyone

I see many questioning the reasoning behind self-isolation. However, self-isolation is not just about protecting yourself, but also, protecting others.

Incubation period for this virus is about two weeks (14 days.) That means if someone has it, they can possibly not show symptoms for up to two weeks, yet be contagious the entire time. This is why self-isolation is so important. Many who have it don’t know it, and are infectious. Thus, those around them can also become infected and incubate the virus for two weeks. As they infect others, the cycle continues.

This virus is so dangerous because once the symptoms begin to show, it’s quite possible you’ve had it for at least 10 days. COVID-19 spreads rapidly, and is especially deadly for those with compromised immune systems, or who are older than 65 years old.

Self-isolation reduces the ability for the virus to spread. The US is just beginning to see the effects of the virus; it’s important not to give it more fuel. Reducing contact with others for at least 10-14 days will allow you to see if symptoms show-up for you, and lower the chances of passing it to anyone outside your household.

If symptoms arise during the 14 days, it’s important to get tested. Those who test positive must follow medical recommendations that include being self-quarantined, and treated. Following the CDC instructions, and your doctor’s recommendations, is the best path for a healthy recovery.

Hope this post clarifies the need and logic behind shutting down all activities for a while.
