The Pandemic Was An Enormous Challenge

One topic that’s come up time and time again on our La Comadre Network podcast and live streams is distance learning. Districts were scrambling to set-up infrastructure, parents were trying to figure out how to work while supervising their children, and kids had to learn in an entirely new (and isolating) way. When we spoke with Marilyn Koziatek, the topic came up and she had some great insights: “Look, this is a challenge. An enormous challenge. This pandemic is devastating. And you know, for me as a working mom, I actually have to report to the school campus. I work at a school and they require all the administrators and classified workers to report physically in person. LAUSD is not offering daycare services to parents. They have daycare for staff, but not for parents. And my husband, he has to physically report to work too. We’re both considered essential workers. So we’re in the system, and I feel like pandemic support for working parents is practically absent.”
