Latinas In Progress ahora Acepta Solicitudes de Estudiantes de Preparatoria

Aprendí sobre la Red de Mujeres Hispanas de Texas-Fort Worth (HWNT-FW) poco después de mudarme a Fort Worth el año pasado. Como fue durante la pandemia, todas sus reuniones se estaban haciendo de forma virtual. Cuando asistí a la primera reunión, me impresionaron las increíbles latinas que formaban parte del HWNT-FW. Inmediatamente me ofrecí como voluntaria en su Comité de Educación, ya que me apasiona la educación.  Al ser parte del Comité de Educación y ser voluntaria de su programa Latinas In Progress, aprendí más sobre el increíble trabajo que las latinas están haciendo aquí en Fort Worth. 

El programa Latinas In Progress (LIP) es un programa para estudiantes latinas de último año de preparatoria. Los miembros de HWNT-FW son mentores de estudiantes latinas durante su último año de preparatoria y ofrecen una serie de talleres para ayudarlas a tener éxito en sus vidas personales y profesionales. 

Los talleres consisten en sesiones de aprendizaje,oportunidades de voluntariado y tutoría. Los talleres generalmente se realizan en colegios y universidades locales,una vez al mes (entre septiembre y marzo) pero el año pasado, los talleres se llevaron a cabo virtualmente debido a la pandemia. Cada taller tiene un tema diferente y está organizado por diferentes universidades. Brindan experiencias de aprendizaje a las participantes de LIP y también brindan acceso a oportunidades, información, recursos financieros y exposición a colegios y universidades locales. 

El programa generalmente termina con un brunch de becas y graduación de Latinas in Progress, pero este año la ceremonia se llevó a cabo, virtualmente. Las estudiantes fueron reconocidas por completar el programa LIP fueron presentadas por miembros caritativos, donantes y universidades. También llevamos a cabo una ceremonia de graduación en automóvil para que las estudiantes del último año de preparatoria pasaran y recibieran bolsas de regalos de HWNT. Mi hija y yo nos ofrecimos como voluntarias para ayudar a empacar las bolsas, fue increíble ver a las jóvenes latinas y sus familias. Las participantes de LIP agradecieron la oportunidad de aprender tanto. ¡Para mí, fue emocionante ver a tantas jóvenes latinas dirigiéndose a la universidad! Mi hija también estaba emocionada de repartir las bolsas, espero que se inspire para seguir ayudando a los demás en todo lo que pueda. 

El programa Latinas in Progress ahora está aceptando solicitudes para la cohorte del próximo año, hasta el 26 de junio de 2021. Lety Gómez was born and raised in East San Jose. She is married with three children. She is proud to be the first in her family to attend college and receive a bachelor’s degree. When she was a teenager, Fr. Mateo Sheedy was the pastor of her parish, Sacred Heart of Jesus. She fondly remembers his passion for social justice, especially justice for the immigrant community in San Jose and ensuring that the parish youth had access to high quality education. Fr. Mateo instilled in her his passion for social justice, but for many years it was kept unlit, deep inside of her. It wasn’t until her youngest daughter was enrolled at Rocketship Fuerza Community Prep in 2014 that her passion for social justice lit up. Thanks to the Rocketship parent organizer at that time, Lety received training and the tools to use her voice for social justice and learned about community organizing. She is proud to be one of the many parents who worked hard to open their school, knowing that the kids needed and deserved a better public school. That struggle is why they named their school Rocketship Fuerza Community Prep. “Fuerza” is the Spanish word for force, strength, or power. Her passion for advocating for equity in education has allowed her to be a voice for other parents in her community who seek high quality education options. In 2014, she chaired the first parent-led Mayoral candidates forum in San Jose, where she realized the power parents have to create change in their communities. She wants to share her story with other parents in an effort to motivate them to get involved so they can advocate together, because united, they can make a change in the educational system and in their communities. In 2020 Lety moved to Texas, where she continues to advocate for equity in public education and school choice across our country.
