Like everyone else in California, our community has been dealing with COVID-19 and the Omicron virus. Many of us at La Comadre are vaccinated and boosted (such as myself). Even then, a lot of us were infected last month during the surge after the holidays.
How is your family doing? How did you all get through the holiday surge? We know the week before and after Christmas brought a rise in Omicron cases and many families are still recovering from its effects. It seems like those that are vaccinated experienced less severe symptoms or hardly any at all, whereas unvaccinated folks suffered more severe symptoms.
We know cases have gone down and we’re in a much less dire situation than we were in January, but it’s still so important to isolate and encourage those around you to do the same if you test positive for COVID. You may also need to keep your children home from school to keep others safe. My own experience showed me how unprepared California was to deal with the Omicron surge. It was extremely difficult to get COVID tests in some parts of the state. It took us 2 days to get home testing kits in the Inland Empire. And though we were all tested, initially only my daughter, who was home from college, tested positive and displayed symptoms like a sore throat. Two days later, I myself developed a sore throat and runny nose… and then tested positive for COVID.
I was isolated in my room for a few days, but thankfully I didn’t feel too bad. As I said, I am vaccinated and boosted. I was confident that my vaccination status protected me against a worse or prolonged illness. We were able to use some of my OG favorites to help us get through. We had lots of chicken pozole, menudo, ginger tea, and water! Vicks was also essential at all times, as well as Zinc, D3, and Vitamin C. Comadre, we hope your family is doing well!
