Academia Avance & Highland Park Community Rallies to Support Undocumented Dad Detained by ICE

Last week, Romulo Avelica-Gonzalez, an undocumented father who has been in the U.S. for 20 years, was dropping off his children to go to school in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, and he was picked up by U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement.

According to reports, Avelica-Gonzalez had a nearly decade old DUI conviction and an incident 20 years ago where he bought a car with an incorrect registration sticker. These are relatively minor offenses, and what Avelica-Gonzalez has done doesn’t put him in the category of the ‘bad dudes’ that President Trump says that he’s focusing on removing.

Ricardo Mireles, the Executive Director of Academia Avance, a wonderful charter school  where Avelica-Gonzalez’s children attend is a friend of La Comadre, and he wants us to share this information about an action happening on Monday, March 6, in downtown Los Angeles.

Mireles offered this message to the community:

“This family is VERY strong and is standing tall — they are not falling for ICE scare campaign!

All the Spanish and English media outlets have focused on the story of Romulo and the Avelica family. We are pushing back on ICE hard for his release. Tuesday was the first victory: the quick and HUGE public response on ICE got him taken off the deportation bus. This father is a celebrity now at the ICE Adelanto detention center given all the media coverage that is getting into the facility. He is able to call his family several times a day at a hefty cost! They want their story to support all the other families that ICE is ripping apart. We need to push back NOW! Victory over ICE – not fear.”

Today there will be an action asking for the release of Romulo Avelica-Gonzalez at 606 South Olive in Downtown Los Angeles at 3:00 PM. For more information, please click here.

Our community needs to send a strong message that we will not tolerate parents being taken from children, and we will fight and highlight as many of these stories of ICE breaking up families as we can.
